The recent disastrous launch accident in the river Tentulia near Nazirpur launch terminal once again pinpointed us to the fact that we could do nothing to avert launch mishaps. Colliding and capsizing of launches have become almost a regular feature in our river way. As reported in the Press, overcrowding was the main cause behind the accident. The launch MV Koko-4 was packed with around 2000 passengers on board which was almost three times the capacity!

We have no word to console the relatives of those who had to embrace early death due to the launch accident. We pray to Almighty Allah for the salvation of the departed souls.

I strongly believe that if the existing river traffic laws are put into strict enforcement, the accidents on our rivers will be dropped drastically. At the same time, motivational campaign has to be intensified to dissuading passengers from overcrowding launches.
Cricket-crazy India woke up to banner headlines and a multitude of special television programmes on Monday celebrating their team's ascent to the top of the Test rankings for the first time.

"The Best & Brightest," ran a page one headline in the Times of India, the country's largest circulated English newspaper, with the sports page blaring "Onederful Tidings."

India jumped from third in the rankings to displace South Africa at the top by clinching a 2-0 series victory over Sri Lanka on Sunday.

"The euphoria over India's arduous ascent to the Mount Everest of Test cricket is perfectly understandable given the craze for the game in our country as expressed in the cliched, but apt, expression that cricket is a religion and its votaries, the players, demi-gods," wrote Mumbai tabloid Mid Day.

India, a nation of 1.2 billion people, has the largest global television cricket audience and is also the international game's financial nerve centre.

Several former cricketers hailed the achievement of Mahendra Singh Dhoni's team, which has recorded series victories over Australia, England and New Zealand and a draw with South Africa over the last 18 months.

"This side is better than ours," Ajit Wadekar, who lead India to groundbreaking series victories in England and the West Indies in 1971, told Times of India.

India will start the new year as the top Test team.

Sourav Ganguly was shaking his head in desperation after getting out to Piyush Chawla just before tea break. His disappointment was justified as his departure left Bengal to crash to their lowest first innings total of the season so far — 193.
The outcome was as per the expectations of Uttar Pradesh skipper Mohammad Kaif, who chose to field on a sporting wicket at Green Park Stadium on the opening day.
With speedster Praveen Kumar sending back experienced opener Deep Dasgupta for a duck on the fifth ball of the day, the other Bengal batsmen, except for opener Arindam Das and Ganguly, found things tough.
Despite facing a volley of bouncers from Praveen, the right-handed Das didn’t lose patience and continued to bat on with ones and twos while seeing Wriddhiman Saha and Manoj Tiwary depart in quick succession. Das seemed to know how important his stay in the middle was and kept his cool. After being joined by Ganguly, they took the score to 47 for three at lunch in 27 overs.
They stitched together 81 runs for the fourth-wicket before Das’s patient innings of 46 (150b, 5x4) came to an end off Chawla.
Ganguly, who had begun with a polished cover drive off R.P. Singh, was in his elements after the break. He pulled, drove and cut Praveen, RP and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar before hitting a six off Praveen Gupta. But he couldn’t read a Chawla flipper. His 66-run knock contained nine fours and a six.
There were nine overs left then when UP began the chase, but it was cut short just after four balls with bad light forcing the umpires to call off the match for the day.
